Peppermint Essential Oil is colourless to pale yellow and has a piercing grassy-menthol refreshing odour with a deep balsamic undertone. It is made from a perennial herb with underground runners which make it easy to propagate. Peppermint, which has several different species, is the most common of the mints as it is highly valued for its therapeutic properties. The oil is known to be an analgesic, anaesthetic, antiphlogistic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, carminative, cephalic, decongestant, emmenagogue, expectorant, hepatic, nervine and stimulant.

Peppermint is recommended by many professionals for its uplifting and energizing attributes. It allows people to clear their minds and refresh the spirits, promoting concentration. This makes it wonderful for offices, conference rooms and classrooms. Because it is a strong anaesthetic, peppermint oil relieves soft tissue pain, joint pain and insect bites. It also cools the skin, easing irritation and inflammation.

Due to the highly concentrated nature of essential oils, they must be diluted with a carrier oil prior to topical use. We recommend consulting a medical practitioner prior to using any essential oil for therapeutic purposes, particularly for those who are pregnant, nursing, or who have a pre-existing medical condition.

In low dilutions, this oil is non-toxic and thus does not irritate the skin; however, its Menthol content can potentially cause irritation to the skin and mucus membranes. It should never be used around the eyes, inner ears, and any sensitive areas. Due to its stimulant properties, using Peppermint oil daily could interfere with sleep patterns.

The following symptoms can also be the result of overdose: skin rashes, urinary problems, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, slow or rapid breathing, convulsions, depression, and in severe cases, unconsciousness.

As is the case with all essential oils, it is imperative to consult a medical practitioner before using Peppermint essential oil for therapeutic purposes. Pregnant and nursing women are especially advised not to use Peppermint essential oil without the medical advice of a physician, and the oil should always be stored in an area that is inaccessible to children, especially those under the age of seven.
